How to use it
Mask effectiveness: 4h in normal activity
The protection provided during inhalation is real but not quantified for a surgical mask: It is not designed to protect the wearer against inhalation of bacteria or airborne viral particles. Therefore, Face Filter Piece (FFP) masks offer better protection for this type of use.
Characteristics of medical equipment
Improved filtering of respiratory droplets
When used once only, a surgical mask contains the dispersal of respiratory droplets produced by sneezing.
However, its effectiveness depends on its design, the materials used in its manufacture, its dimensions and its fit on the face.
It has been shown to greatly limit the transmission of airborne viruses (influenza, coronavirus...) by infected people.
Far more effective than
fabric masks
Its effectiveness has also been demonstrated in enclosed spaces (inside buildings).
For example, the widespread use of this type of mask (by patients, staff and visitors) in hospitals significantly reduces the risk of nosocomial influenza.
In this context, it is also far more effective than fabric masks, which can be used in the event of shortages, such as during the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020.
The main reasons given for the reduced effectiveness of fabric masks are moisture retention, low filtration capacity and contamination when reused without soap washing.
